100th Division Guestbook - August 2004 - Current
I am the grandson of Eugene “Duff" Doffing. He was a corporal in 4th platoon of E company in the 397th infantry regiment. I am trying to find anyone who knew him, detailed information regarding his personal actions during the war, and/or any personal stories.

My uncle served in the army during world war 2. All I know is that he was at D day & basicly walked from france to germany. His name was Chester "Check" Kelly. He was a sergant who carried a BAR, Tompson & a 45. He was constantly telling his men to check their equipment especially their socks. Which he said was the most important thing you had. Thats how he got his nickname. He was big kentucky county boy that could carry more amo belts for his bAR than any one else. He was around 25 years

Is this 325th the same one in the 100th Infantry Division. I was looking at the 84th infantry. but i wonder if it is the 100th. Can you help me figure this out? thanks

My Great Uncle was Anthony Cusumano. He served with the 397th Regiment 100th Infantry Division E.T.O. Company E. He was wounded and lost the ability to walk, but that never stopped him from going anywhere. He returned to Staten Island New York where he spent the rest of his life near his parents and brothers until his death in 1971.My father tells me that he was the glue that held our family together. He loved taking and developing his own photos. I never got to meet him but he sounds like a wonderful member of my family.

Sir,
I'm a 23 year old French student in History is studying soldiers who were called "White Russians" during WWII. These soldiers were Russian prisoners of war who were recruited by the Wehrmacht and became German soldiers who fought mainly in France. If you are familiar with this type of soldier or had contact with any of them during WWII and would like to share your experiences you can contact me at the following e-mail address.
Sincerely yours,

I am trying to find unit rosters by platoon (and squad?) for E company of the 397th Infantry Regiment. From my research, I have found that the Army Records Center (National Archives) in St. Louis had these rosters from 1944-1946 but they were destroyed in a fire during the 1970's. Does anyone know who else might have this information?

My Uncle and Godfather S/Sgt Oscar Thompson was killed in action near Odheim, Germany in April of 1945. I just visited my cousin in Conn. and talked about our Uncle Oscar. As the family historian my cousin Lynn, gave me the 48 star flag that covered his coffin during the reinterment at Pinelawn National Cemetery in 1947. The scene is vivid to this day. I was only a child of 6 but remember all the flag covered coffins, as far as the eye could see. It is a memory I'll never forget. I still visit his grave on Memorial Day each year. His flag now hangs in my den, with other family memorabilia. It is my proudest possession. They truly were the greatest generation. Richie.

Hi,
I'm searching for the men who freed my hometown Schorndorf and the little village "Weiler" on 21st and 22nd April 1945. There is a story my grandmother told me about one of the soldiers treating her and her family most generously and I'm trying to find this man or his family for her because she never forgot the kindnes of this man. It would be really great if anyone here could help me - so if you have any information or are or know one of those men please contact me, thank you!

A Great man passed away the night of the 30th March 2008.He fought in the second world war. He landed in Marseille France, and marched from there up to the front , then fighting thru France- snow rain or shine.Fought the Nazis at the marginot line/ Bitche. Fought in the Vosges mountains thru the coldest weather, and pushed the Germans back over the Rhine river. Then fought his way into the Stuttgart, Pforzheim area, till the Germans surrendered. And the second World War was over. He got shot in the left chest by a sniper,He was put in for the silver star- but some kind of snafu and he ended up with a Bronze star. Which is nothing to cry about, as he showed valor under fire, so whatever metal he received was just as great for his recognition. He fought with the 100th Division, 399th Regiment,2nd battalion, headquarters company, anti tank platoon, 2nd squad. That man was my Dad Seraphim Anthony Gouveia. And Iam very proud of that man and his accomplishments. The 100th Division, they were all a great bunch of guys, that helped save the free world. I love u Dad and will miss u dearly.

I am a book collector and seller. I found what I think is a fairly scarce if not rare copy of the 100th Infantry THE STORY OF THE CENTURY printed in 1946. The front and back are in in very rough condition but the interior is sound. I will be trying to restore the book for sale...probably on E-Bay. I do some Vietnam military historical research my self and am amazed at the roster of KIA, WIA, MIA, DOW, &MIA's and rosters of awards by name and unit. Of course the history of the battles are and are very detailed from training to the end of the war. I would pay anything to have a book like this on some Vietnam units....records are not this complete and a don't go down to Company level...Brigade level is were you usually start hitting dead ends. If any one would like to make a comment on this book, have knowledge of its significance or value...please drop me a line...I haven't found a lot of information on this book yet but I know it is a historical document.

My grandfather passed away on 12 May, 2008 and was surrounded by his family when he died. He talked of his time in the 399th quite often and was very proud of the time he served. If anyone knows of him and recollects any memories of him, please feel free to email me. He was and still is a great inspiration for me. I am currently serving in the U.S. Navy and will retire after 20 years of service in 2009. Dear 100th Infantry Division Veterans:
The soldiers of the U.S 14th Armored Division are finally overjoyed that the historians of the 100th Division, especially Mr. Franklin Gurley, explained the the 399th Infantry Regiment that on their eastern flank on December 31, 1944 was the independent 6th corps unit, the 117th Cavalry Recon Squadron that "bugged out to Wingen and then as far a Saverne on January 1, 1945 was NOT A 14th ARMORED DIVISION UNIT!" Special thank goes to Colonel Keith Bonn who published Wolf Zoepf's book on the German 6th SS Mountain Division "Seven Days in January" which caused some umbrage with the 117th Cavalry Recon Squadron whose bug out made the 94th Cavalry Recon Squadron and the 62nd Armored Infantry Battalion of the U.S 14th Armored Division "unbelievable Difficulty" in re-establishing contact with the U.S 100th Infantry Division's 399th Infantry Regiment as the German 559th Volks Grenadier Division poured into the 117th Cav's "vacated positions" between Task Force Hudelson 14th Armored Division elements and the 399th Infantry Regiment. I'm looking for anyone who has information on my grandfather Frank Heidecke from the Bronx NY. He served with the 925th Field Artillery Battalion (Battery C). I know that he served from the time the 100th left New York Harbor to the end of the war and was honorably discharged. He recieved a bronze star for his service and is listed as having received the bronze star in the 100th division's "Story of a Century". I knew my grandfather unitl i was sixteen years old. I knew he served in WWII but i have very little information on what he actually did. If anyone has any information regarding the 925th FA Battery C or even better my grandfather specifically. I would be extremely thankful.

I thought people here would be interested in the web pages I created to share my Dad's WWII memories with other family members. My dad (deceased 2000) is Raymond A. Bumgarner and he was in 397th regiment of 100th Division, HQ Co. Contact me if you'd like the web site address. Those pages are an accumulation of things he had in a box of "WWII" memories including a journal he opened in June 1945 of his combat and occupation memories from Oct, 1944 to Mar, 1946. I have also transcribed letters he sent home and am just finishing putting in the last few. Carol King

Hello - I am looking for anyone who knew my grand father during the war. He told me he was in the "397th Regiment, 3rd Battallion, Headquarters Company". I'm not very knowledgable about the military, so I don't know if I wrote that correctly. However, I am putting a few things together for him, memoirs or something I guess. He just opened up a little bit about fighting in the war, and he seemed very reminiscient. Anyone who knew him and has a story or anecdote about him I would really love to hear from you.
Also, he mentioned a man whose last name was Klein or Kline, and he talked about how he had candy on their first night after they landed in Marseille. He said he would never forget him. If anyone has any information on him as well, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks so much and look forward to hearing from you all!

I live in the city of Indio, Ca. near Palm Springs. I have been collecting the history of our World War 2 veterans since 1998, in the form of copies of documents and pictures, and the military history of that veteran. I have been very fortunate to have interviewed, either by e-mail / snail mail or in-person or over the phone. I currently have over 215 World War II veterans, from all branches and ranks, in my private library. Some of the veteran's binders, I have done, are over 60 pages and some are as small as 6 pages.
In 1998 this project came about while I was working in the medical field; this World War 2 Navy veteran had been a patient several times in the emergency room. I always find his stories interesting to listen to. One day before I was to start work, I was told that he had passed away that night. He would always tell me that people were just not interested in his stories, about his time on a Navy Destroyer in the Pacific. How untrue this was, so from that day on I have been doing this.
This has not always been easy for me, due to the fact that I am a one man show. I do feel that the stories of the men and women who fought or took part in one of the largest conflicts, that lasted 6 years, at the cost of millions of lives, should be told to some who is willing to take time to document it. For every World War II veteran we loose, a piece of history is gone forever. Just look in any local newspaper's obituary section and see how many veterans pass on everyday. I always ask myself, was his / her story told to someone so that future generations will know what these men and women did for this country or did he / she take it with them to their grave? It won't be long before all World War II Veterans are gone.
I have always been interested in World War II for many years and what a better way to learn this then to talk to those who lived it, plus its my way of keeping the memories and stories alive for what I hope is a long time.
For the World War 2 veterans or the family of, who have trusted me with this information, I will always be grateful. I have a different questionnaire for each branch that I have complied in asking the veteran about their military experience, ranging from 30 to 42 questions.
All the information pertaining to the each veteran, contained in the 64 binders that makes up my library at this time have, comes directly from the Veteran himself and/or his family members. This information was obtained by e-mail, snail mail, phone and personal interviews. Any other information not pertaining directly from the Veteran derives from countless hours of internet research or libraries and from my own World War II reference books and magazines.
This undertaking has been very rewarding, as it has been frustrating and of course very time consuming. All this information will be placed in the General Patton Museum in Chiriaco Summit, CA, sometime in the near future. Feel free to ask me any thing you wish. I hope to hear back from you soon.
Very respectfully,

My father, George Byrnes, was a radioman in HQ Co 1 Bn 399th. I find myself at the end of my civl service career proudly serving at Hammonds Barracks (named after wireman PFC Robert Hammonds of G Company 397th). The barracks is located in Seckenheim, a town between Mannheim and Heidelberg. Several years ago I obtained Dad's company reports, and now find myself looking for housing in several of the towns that my dad spent a day or two in early April 1945 before the battle at Heilbronn. If any of you have any particular memories, or stories of the area, I would like to hear them. To any sons and daughters of Centurymen, I would urge you to go to a convention and meet these humble heroes. At each I have attended, I have met someone who knew my dad. Don't wait!

UPDATED EMAIL ADDRESS.
I am one of three sons and a daughter of a proud "Son of Biche" Bronze Star recipient. My father was attached to the 398th Inf Reg MEDICAL DET during the war. He very rarely, if ever, would speak about his action during the war. However, now that he is getting older, we cajoled him into relating some of his tales to us. For our grandchildren, we videotaped the almost 3 hour "interrogation" of his exploits and memories, complete with atlas to show the route which his unit followed. One story that he related had to do with one of his sister companies coming under attack at night. The sister unit had sustained a number of casualties and requested assistance with evacuating wounded. My father and one or two other medics volunteered to go cross country via jeep in the open at night to aid and assist by whatever means possible. My fathers name is Fred SELKO(WITZ) he was from New York and was a medic during the war.

Does anyone from the 397th or the Medic Battalion attached,
(maybe the 325th) know of the fate of Beverly Kline or her
son, who was born during the war, John Kline.
I have just completed a 9 month long job of organizing all
of my father's (Joe Cosby, 397th, company E) letters home from the war. I ran across a letter from a widow of one of my dad's comrades sent to him. Her name was Beverly Kline.
She was the wife of deceased medic, John S. Kline, who was with the 397th company E in Heilbronn, when he took a bullet through his medic's cross on his helmet.
He had a son, John Kline, who I believe lived in Sturgis,
Michigan. I would like to know he is still living. Did his mom remarry and does he now have another name? My internet searches keep coming up at a dead end.

My father was in the 100th Division 397th Batilion. He fought in WWII from 1944-1945 or 46 and won two bronze stars. I think he rose in rank to a second Leutenant. He was stationed in Europe for a year after the war. He hardly ever talked about the war and died when he was 48 and I was 20. I really would like to have known anything about his experiences in the war.

My father, Donald Brice Cantrell, served with the 100th Infantry Div. from 10/1944 to 03/1946. His discharge papers say he was awarded a purple heart and bronze star victory ribbon. Is that bronze star and victory ribbon, two separate awards? My mother wants to add it to his cemetery marker but the VA says that is not the same as a bronze star. I am so excited to have recieved this link. I was adopted very young, and while I have contact with my biological mother, my granddaddy died before I was lagally able to contact them. With him, he took all the information about my family. Now I'm trying to research and create a family tree for myself and my children. My great uncle was Clifford N. Rose of the 399th Infantry Regiment. Thanks to this web site, I now have that information along with where he's burried. It is my dream to one day have the funds to take my children to France and see the memorial there. If anyone who reads this happens to know anything of my uncle, I would greatly appreciate it if you could contact me, even if it's just a story that has been passed on from another family member. My e-mail address is rochelle4071@aol.com. Again, thank you for this site and the information it has and will continue to provide me with.

Hi, was so pleased and surprised to find your website. When I first started researching my partner's genealogy, we looked for information regarding his father's military history. We found him, Pfc. Dwight Ewing, on the Silver Star page for the 397th, battle for Heilbronn. There are many letters he sent home to his parents (he was 19 at the time) that they kept. I don't have them at this location, they're awaiting scanning at my house in NJ. I'm sure the family would be very happy to send copies if you're interested - and I'm sure you know everything was heavily censored, so much of what is written is only alluded to. I found one letter from December 1944 interesting as it has Dwight telling his father that yes, he was right on about his location. Now we know that was the Vosges area thanks to you. We also have the book The Regiment of the Century: the story of the 397th. It was musty, so I had it wrapped away with mothballs and dryer sheets and can be read now. Your site is wonderful! Thanks, Janice Bernath & Doug Ewing

My Daddy John P. Wallis served with the 100th Division Infantry, Company C, 303 Engineer Battalion during World War II (November 27, 1942 - February 28, 1946). Over the years he stayed in touch with many of his buddies who have sadly passed away and attended some reunions. My Daddy will turn 86 years old on October 18, 2007 and if there is anyone out there that remenbers him or his unit it would be such a surprise for him to hear from them. CIB
I am looking for information regarding the awarding of the Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB).
My understanding is that the CIB was awarded on a General Order.
Does the GO give the date of the engagement on the citation?
How soon after an engagement was an order for the CIB issued? I have read that for some awards, such as the Silver Star, the GO was dated as late as 1946 due to pending revues.
Is anyone aware of GOs for the CIB that were issued after the end of any conflict or engagement and dated into late-1945 and 1946?
Was the CIB ceremonially awarded to individuals or was it handed out en masse as to a whole company and the orders presented or issued to the soldiers at some other time or just filed with their personnel records?
For those that received the CIB, is anyone missing documentation for it in Block 33 - Awards and Citations on the Enlistment Record and Report of Separation – Honorable Discharge (WD AGO Form 53-55) or not have a copy of the GO?
Among my father’s military possession, was the CIB. I am having trouble finding documentation. His military personnel records were destroyed in the fire at the records center in the 1970’s and it does not appear on his discharge papers. There are a couple of errors or inconsistencies on his discharge paper that I found through reconstructing his files and I am trying to find out if the omission of documentation of the CIB is another.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
David Wiswar

Dear Mr/ Mrs,
The concept of erecting a WWII virtual museum was born 15 years ago in the fertile mind of a passionate military historian
Eric Bijtelaar 32 years old from Purmerend, The Netherlands.
Today, this dream is slowly becoming a reality. This noble project has the support of the some veterans listed on my website and the city of Purmerend as a whole.
The goal is to educate future generations to the dedication and sacrifices of those who fought and died that Europe may be free.
We will ensure that those gallant men who made the supreme sacrifice on European soil, during the greatest conflict ever known to man, are never forgotten. Though they are not here today, to tell us their stories themselves, it will be our sacred trust to speak for them.
From 15 years we have been building an extensive collection of authentic WW2 memorabilia tied to individual soldiers and local history. This priceless, one-of-a-kind, collection is a modest collection with some important historical items.
Not only do I hold this collection but I also have gathered together a collection of related photographs and more recently with the help of advertisement in local papers items from the Dutch resistance and
people who were hiding Jewish family's.
To continue to grow, as a virtual online learning centre, ww2online.nl must ensure that its collections reflect the historic achievements that have been written in all of Europe. In order to achieve this goal, the ww2online.nl educational centre depends upon authentic artifacts to develop and enrich the collections, which are accessible to the public through local exhibitions and publishing.
You can help to ensure that your cultural heritage is preserved for the benefit of the current and future generations by donating or selling authentic ww2 memorabilia to the ww2online.nl educational centre, where it will be respectfully preserved and maintained.
The ww2online.nl collections house objects which document the storied history of all forces in WWII and we are constantly seeking to acquire new artifacts to add to our base. While we do purchase items, our acquisition funding is limited.
Please take some time to go through the website which is about to change in the next few months and read the stories that are listed from several veterans.
Thanks you for your time and god bless.
Regards,
Eric Bijtelaar

For all of you that are new students of the war, like I was just 7 short months ago....(Feb. 2007 is better late than never.) I recommend "A 4F Goes To War" By: John C. Angier III
It was very easy to read and quite informative. Even thought the author was from the 399th and my dad was from the 397th Regiment, it helped me formulate a few more informative questions to ask.

I recently had a long visit with my uncle. Paul E Wessinger of Boiling Springs SC. He finally began telling some of the history of the 100th and the fact that he had recived a Purple Heart and several other medals. We talked for hours and he told me many of the stories of the Vosgues, the Citadal, Heilbronn, Gailsdorf Stuttgart and many others. He told me stories that no other members of his family ever heard. He let me have one of the newsletters of the 100th. He spoke only briefly of liberating a concentration camp outside Munchen, but could not remember the name. He did tell me some of the things the 100th saw and discovered there. In the newsletter Vol. 49, No. 2 dated July '06, there is a photo titled "Mountain of Shoes" and it states that it is Dauchau. Can someone advise me if this is in fact the camp that the 100th liberated and some dates etc. I do know that Dachau is the camp that was about 10 miles or so outside of Munich, and one of the better known, and my uncle said that the camp was about 10 - 20 miles outside of Munich. My grandfather was a member of the 399th regiment, company H, in the 100th. I would love to know the best way to write out his army information in army shorthand. For example, the popular Band of Brothers easy company, I have seen as something like E CO 506 PIR. How would I write 100th division, 399th regiment, (Battalion???), company H?
Thanks so much for any help...very proud of my grandpop.

My dad, Tom Worsham, passed away in February. He was a SSgt in Co. K, 399th Infantry, 100th division. He was involved in all the combat activities of the 399th, from the Vosges to Heilbronn, except for a period in December, 1944 when he was recovering from shrapnel wounds. Most of the guys he was closest to are now deceased, but if anyone remembers him I would love to hear from you. He started talking about his war experiences in his old age. He was very affected by the death of his lieutenant, Marcel Novotny. Lt. Novotny was killed instantly by a bullet wound to the head in the action at Bielstein hill, just prior to Heilbronn, I believe. My father was crouched beside him in a foxhole when it happened.

Hello All:
I am looking for information on PFC George E. Koontz of Co. K, 397th Regiment, 100th Infantry Division. I have a picture of my grandfather, Corporal Jonah Bevins, with a young man identified only as "Koontz" on the back of the picture, they both were in uniform, and the only Koontz I can find is George E. Koontz, who is listed as receiving a Purple Heart for wounds received in battle. If you are a surviving relative, or if he is still alive, I would very much like to share this picture with you (or him) and if he is alive, perhaps communicate to share any memories he has of my grandfather, who passed away back in 1971. Please feel free to contact me.
Thank you,

Not sure why I never came across this site before. My father was a proud member of the 100th, 397th regiment. Walter E. Scribner, Jr. who would have been listed from Baltimore, MD. He was in the Battle of Bettviller Dec 30, 1944. I lost him in 1971. I noticed that there is (or was) a presentation on the battle of Rimling at the Smithsonian. Would be curious to know if this organization is still active.

Although I knew, from family stories and having attended his funeral (Manchester, IA, 1948 or '49 -- I would have been 6) I have only recently learned that my uncle, Howard F. Dolphin (a PFC in Co G, 398th Inf Army -- part of the 100th)(who was killed in action) died in the vicinity of Puberg or Sucht, France around December 4, 1944 (listed as MIA until around the 14th-15th). There had been a family story that he died in the Battle of the Bulge -- although, of course, that offensive occurred after Howard's death -- I always took a closer look at films or stories wondering if I could catch a glimpse of him!
I have long been curious about the "details" and the history and have even had dreams about young soldiers encamped in snowy woods and now through the aid of very generous researchers discovered on line, I have been able to put together more details and in doing so discover the history of the 100th and the part my uncle played in its history and feel proud that my uncle was part of its long and honorable traditions of service.
My first intent is to honor Howard through this entry. I knew that he had earned a medal during the war, but have only recently discovered it was the Silver Star awarded posthumously, as well as a purple heart.
My second interest would be to hear from anyone who may have known him during his service in WWII. Any memory, however small, would be considered a great treasure by me.
Thank you for making this opportunity possible.

My father PFC William W. Taylor (deceased) of Los Angeles was a "Son of Bitche" with the 399th. Infantry, Able Co.
I have a collection of 265 letters he wrote home documenting his entire WWII experience from Oct. 1943 when he was at Camp Abbot, Oregon as a member of A.S.T.P through the end of the War and into his duty during the occupation of Germany in 1945-46. I am transcribing the letters and researching the information in them with hopes of publishing them on the internet. The letters are very well written and loaded with information, sketches and anecdotes. I am willing to share them with anyone interested. This is a "labor of love" and I no financial interest here. I just want to share this with you and hopefully help preserve the history of these great men.

congratulations on your wellmade and highly interesting website. I was born in Heilbronn in 1954 and grew up with your successors stationed there - never believing that these friendly boys once had come as enemies.
In your guestbook I found the entry of Mr. Joseph A. Aaron, Houston, TX USA, posted on Friday, April 05, 2002. I fear to have to disappoint Mr. Aaron, the German jet you saw had nothing to do with the grim defence of the almost completely destroyed city. The Heilbronn area never had had an airfield
for starting or landing a jet. In december 1944 the Britains found that the only interesting thing in Heilbronn was the railway - raf-mod-uk-bombercommand-dec44
I by myself think that the harbour, some steps downwards the Neckar river from the place you crossed it, was of more interest for the Germans. Note that the British Bomber Command lost 12 Lancasters during this raid, extraordinarily many losses and evidence of a strong anti-aircraft defence.
Heilbronn was well defended, anyhow and moreover the 100th reached the city only two weeks after Adolf Hitler's "Nero-order" when fanatism and fear culminated.

I am a 41 year daughter of Joseph H. Cosby, who turns 81 years old Feb. 12, who is currently living in Portland, Or.
I am writing this Feb. 4, 2007
He was part of the "Sons Of Bitche" and I only know that because he has a hat that he received from a reunion. He told me tonight that he was part of the 397th, company E, only because I called and asked. Then the dam broke and
he spoke of many things, memories of a boy, age 17, that enlisted to fight a hellacious war from Marceilles, France on October 20, 1944 until May 5, 1945. He spoke of places I later saw on this website.....Baccaret, France, where the first of many sargeants would be killed, as he observed by the German enemy. He spoke of a very cold Winter, that he spent
digging foxholes in the snow to sleep in.....taking German
P.O.W.s, saving his buddy, Victor Nash, by putting him up
a coal cellar in a German factory in Heilbronn, Germany.
He spoke of crossing the Neckar River at night with searchlight that the Germans saw, as they snuck up behind them.....only to meet up with them in the infamous Heilbronn, which he described as the "worse before it got
better." He spoke of loss and friendship. He even shared some humor, which I am sure now knowing what little I know,
saved him from insanity. He spoke of luck, fate, and then
out of the next breath, God's sovereign power, to reconcile
all that is good/ bad about humanity.
I have never felt so proud, nor have I felt so much love
for my father, as I did tonight. Thank you for this website and the informed questions I could ask. This was the springboard for the most powerful and enlightening conversation I have ever had with my father, truly my
American hero.

I am blown away by this moving site. My grandfather died on April 11, 1945 while serving in Company M, 397th. His name was Archie L Emery. He left a young wife and three kids (one was my father) behind in Ashtabula, OH. Their lives were never the same. I would love to hear from anyone that might know something about him or have a picture of him, we literally have only three surviving photos of his time in the service and then we lost him.

Thank you all for everything you have done for your country and the world. Everyone of you is a hero beyond magnitude. My dad was Roy M Lee of Medfield Mass who served with the 100th, 397th Infantry, Company M. Beyond that, we knew little history of the fighting the 100th was engaged in. You see, he never spoke of the fighting, but he would tell us many stories of his life in the army and the good times he shared with his comrades. In reading many of the postings on this site, it appears he had many brothers in arms who felt the same way. I guess some things are better left unsaid. My mom kept a wonderful scrapbook of my father's time with the 100th, which we still treasure. We have many photos, few of the soldiers are identified, but they are all our friends. Thank you for this site and providing such great history. It is wonderful to learn of the great contribution my dad and the other members of the 100th made during that brutal winter.

My father - Melville Jack Schwal, Private First Class, served in the 100th Infantry Division in the Medical Corps. This has been a very interesting website - and I want to thank you for maintaining this - and a special heartfelt thank you - to all the men who served our country - during WWII. And of course a special prayer to those who serve today in Iraq. My father died about 10 years ago - and would be about 89 years old today. I have original programs from Valley Forge General Hospital - Christmas Dinner - 1943 - and a Washington's Birthday Dinner in 1944. The Christmas dinner program - lists hundreds of names of Officers in the Medical Corps. It was fun to see my father's name in the program.

Does anyone know anything about Edward Pisowicz, who was in the 399th regiment and killed on 19 Nov 1944. My wife, 3 daughters and my parents managed to visit the Epinal Cemetery this past April and saw his grave. His is my great uncle and my mother's uncle and any information would be greatly appreciated. Visiting the cemetary with our 8,9, and 10 year old daughters was an incredible learning and deeply moving experience for us all. Thank you!
